১৯৮২ সালে সম্পাদিত UN Convention of the Law of the Sea অনুযায়ী উপকূল থেকে ২০০ নটিক্যাল মাইল (৩৭০ কিলোমিটার ) পর্যন্ত Exclusive Economic Zone হিসেবে নির্ধারণ করা হয়েছে। এ সীমার মধ্যে উপকূলবর্তী দেশগুলো মাছ ধরা , বৈজ্ঞানিক গবেষণা, পরিবেশ সংরক্ষণ ও অর্থনৈতিক কর্মকাণ্ডের একচেটিয়া অধিকার লাভ করে।
